Macy's Make-A-Wish Campaign -- A Fun Way to Help!
Sage Burress, a 4th grade student at J.F. Burns and an Ambassador for the Macy’s Make-A-Wish Campaign, is challenging all children to reach the goal of a $1,000,000.00 by December 6th.

- The students in Mrs. Weed's 4th grade class have been working really hard to create a weekly newspaper outlining events going on at KME. The paper is sold every Thursday for 25 cents and all proceeds are being donated to the KME PTO. Thank you from the PTO!!

What's new with our PTO?
Just a reminder that our next PTO meeting is TONIGHT at 6:30 pm in the Media Center. As always, children are welcome. We hope to see you there!!
What an amazing event!! We had so many veterans and service people attend our celebration that it was too many to count! Everyone enjoyed the refreshments and then headed down the hallways to be honored by our students and staff. Then, everyone participated in a very moving ceremony honoring all veterans and service people all around the world. The children did a wonderful job in making cards and decorations for all to enjoy.
A big thank you to Jennifer Adams and her committee that worked tirelessly to ensure that this event was successful!

Here's a KME PTO update for you!
Due to Election Day, our next PTO Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 12 at 6:30 pm in the Media Center. We hope to see you there!
As a reminder, there will be no school for KME students on Tuesday, November 5 due to Election Day. If you are looking for a fun activity for your children, Jump Stop Safari in Lebanon is sponsoring a "Jump and Play Party" from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Our PTO will earn $1 for each student that attends! For more information, including costs, please contact Jump Stop Safari at 513.228.0333.

Our first Movie Knight is coming up on Friday, October 25 starting at 6:15 pm! We will be screening "Hotel Transylvania" in the cafeteria. There is a charge of $5 per student and this includes a piece of pizza, popcorn and a drink. Each child is required to have an adult chaperon -- there is not an additional charge for family members to attend the movie but you can pay $10 to receive a piece of pizza, popcorn and a drink for a family of 4. Also, there will be a bake sale and additional concessions for sale.
To keep with our Halloween theme, your child may wear their Halloween costume (this is not required). The registration form (due by Wednesday 10/23) has been sent home plus you can locate this form on our blog under "Events/Fundraisers".

Again, thank you to everyone who made this event a success!! We were able to raise over $11,000 -- all of this funding will go to providing programs and activities for our students!! As an additional reward for our hard work, Skatetown USA is sponsoring a skating event TONIGHT from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. All KME students and their families receive FREE admission to the event (skate rentals, food and drinks are available for an additional cost). Please join us tonight at Skatetown USA in West Chester!!
Keep on sending in your Box Tops!! We currently have over 1,806 collected with Mrs. Burgdorf's class leading. Please send in your Box Tops through October 28 so that your child's classroom can be the potential winner of a mini-carnival and your teacher can win a $25 gift card!! Just send the neatly-trimmed labels in either glued to a collection sheet or in a ziploc bag with your child's name and teacher's name before the deadline!!

Please be sure that the bags or the sheet contain your child's name and their teacher's name. Last year, we raised $2299 with this program -- let's beat that goal this year!!

PTO Meeting Tomorrow!!
Please join us tomorrow, Tuesday, 10/1, at 6:30 pm in the Media Center for our monthly PTO meeting. This meeting brings us a special guest speaker -- Lt. Patrick Strausbaugh from the Deerfield Fire Department. He will be discussing fire safety and provide a special demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher. It's time for our first of three Box Top Collection Drives!! The PTO is sponsoring a contest to see which class can collect the most Box Tops from now until October 28. - Our annual Walk-A-Thon was completed last Friday afternoon. All had a wonderful time and it was such a lovely day to be out getting fresh air while raising money for the PTO! A special thanks to Jennifer Adams, Erin Deutsch and all of the parent volunteers who worked to make this event a success. As a reminder, there will be a KME Skate Night at Skatetown USA on October 9 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm -- the admission is free for all KME students!!
- This week, all Kings Mills Elementary students participated in the Crystal Clear Science Program “The Science of Everyday Life”. With the help of Kings high school volunteers and the program facilitators, the children got to observe experiments using everyday household materials – from kitchen ingredients to car parts! Thanks to Jenny Circello and our PTO Program Committee for planning these fun and educational events.

- Please donate any new or gently used games and puzzles (please ensure that they have all of the pieces) to the KME PTO. We are collecting these items for use for indoor recess.
- The Columbia Intermediate School Skiing Club is about ready to start! This year, children from the elementary schools are invited to join. For more details, please contact Sara Legault at slegault@kingslocal.net.
- Be on the lookout for your child's "Art To Remember" packet. This is a great opportunity to order products made from your child's art while supporting our art education! Please contact Katie Heagen with any questions at kheagen@kingslocal.net.

Time to lace up those gym shoes! The annual KME Walk-A-Thon will take place on Friday, September 27, 2013. Happy Friday! Thanks to all of you who attended our first PTO meeting of the year -- it was very informative! As a reminder, our next meeting is Tuesday, October 1 at 6:30 pm in the Media Center.

Please take the time to review all of the opportunities the children have in our After School Programs. Information can be located in the "Program" tab of the blog. For parents interested in the I-Flip tumbling class, there is an updated registration form located in this tab.
Truly easy (and free!) ways that you can help KME PTO raise funds are to collect Box Tops and to ensure that your Kroger Plus card is registered online and linked to KME PTO. Just log on to KrogerCommunityRewards.com and follow the instructions. Please keep in mind that you need to re-register your card every year so please make sure that your card is currently registered. With only 54 families participating last year, Kroger provided us with a donation of $3,350. Let's increase this for this year!!

Today is the first day of school!! It is a fun and exciting day and you will have plenty of information to review once your child comes home. In the meantime, here are a few highlights from our PTO calendar:

Wednesday 8/14 Fee Pay Day 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm -- this will be an opportunity to pay fees, complete needed paperwork, pick up your pre-ordered SchoolKids school supplies and at 5:10 pm, have a chance to see your child's class list!
Friday 8/16 PTO Ice Cream Social 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm -- a fun chance to meet your teachers and to see old and new friends!

School Supplies
Attached is a list of all of the school supplies that your child will need for the 2013-14 school year. As a reminder, you will be able to pick up your pre-ordered SchoolKids supplies at Fee Pay Day if you used this service.
Volunteers Needed
We would really love to have your help on this important projects:
Fee Pay Day -- We are looking for 10 volunteers to help organize and "man" stations during Fee Pay Day. The date is Wednesday, 8/14 from 2:45 pm to 5:00 pm. If interested, please contact Nyioka Phalen at nyioka@gmail.com.
We also have some opportunities within PTO -- we are looking for a Volunteer Coordinator (recruits room parents and volunteers at the beginning of the school year and for various events during the school year) and a Copy Coordinator (to copy and distribute PTO handouts for Friday folders as needed). Can you believe that we only have 12 more days of school? We have many events going on in these last 12 days so be sure to check out the Calendar of Events on the blog for the latest information regarding all of the fun activities that we have going on at KME!!
Talent Show
Come out and view all of the amazing talent that we have at KME! On May 17, 20 and 22, many of our students will be showcasing their talents during the annual Talent Show. Please check out the Calendar of Events for more detailed information.
Field Day
Beginning on May 21, each class will be participating in Field Day events. The students look forward to this fun event each year! We are looking for a few parents to assist each day during Field Day -- if you are interested, please contact Nyioka Phalen at nyioka@gmail.com for more information.
Garden Club
The Garden Club, along with Go Cincinnati (a volunteer team), will come together on May 18 to weed and mulch the landscape beds at KME. We are looking for helping hands! If you are interested in helping, please contact Emily Robinson at emilyrobinson45039@gmail.com or you can just show up! Feel free to bring along any gardening tools that you may need.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week -- May 6-10, 2013
Let's celebrate Hollywood Style and honor all of the stars at KME -- our teachers and staff! Here are some fun ideas on how to say "thank you" during this "star-studded" week:
Monday: Bring in a favorite flower or plant for your teacher -- Thank you for helping our minds grow!
Tuesday: Bring in a glue stick to help restock the classroom -- Thank you for sticking with us!
Wednesday: Bring in a pencil and write a thank you note of appreciation for your teacher -- Thank you for steering us in the "write" direction!
Thursday: Bring in hand sanitizer, anti-bacterial wipes or fruit for your teacher -- Thank you for keeping us healthy!
Friday: Bring in highlighters, markers or crayons to restock your teacher's classroom -- Thank you for making our year colorful and bright! Also, be sure to wear your favorite "dress-up" accessory to celebrate Hollywood Style! Top Hats, Bow Ties, Dresses and Sparkly Jewelry are some fun ideas.

Kindergarten Registration
We would like to thank all of the new (and current!) families at Kindergarten registration. We are looking forward to seeing you next year at our KME events!

Please mark your calendars and save the date for the KME Fourth Grade Awards Ceremony and Picnic Celebration! This fun day will take place on Thursday, May 30 beginning at 11:00 am in the gymnasium and then will be followed by a picnic lunch in the cafeteria. The spring session of Mileage Club begins on Monday, April 22 and will continue (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) through May 10 during recess. We are always looking for parents to be "lap markers" during this time -- if you would like to attend your child's recess, come on up and help "mark" the students' cards as they complete their laps. If you are interested in volunteering during recess time (11:00 am to 1:00 pm) on any of the Mileage Club days, please contact Kim Rezenbrink at skrenz@msn.com or at 616.5593. No adult supervision is required (PTO will sponsor the supervision) but there is a cost of $5 per child. Please refer to the attachment for more information and the RSVP form.
